Driving Test Tips
Preparing for your practical driving test does not need to feel overwhelming. Use these tips to understand what to expect, avoid common mistakes and arrive at your test feeling prepared, calm and confident.
What to Expect on Your Driving Test
Your practical driving test is designed to check that you can drive safely, confidently and independently in different road and traffic conditions.
You will be asked to read a vehicle number plate before driving.
You will answer two vehicle safety questions.
The examiner will assess your driving in different road conditions.
You will be asked to complete a reversing or parking exercise.
Prepare Before Test Day
Good preparation starts before you arrive at the test centre. Make sure the important details are already taken care of.
Know Your Test Time
Double-check your appointment date, time and test centre before test day. Give yourself plenty of time so that you do not arrive feeling rushed.
Bring Your Driving Licence
Make sure you have your UK driving licence with you. Check everything you need for the test before leaving home.
Do Not Forget Your Glasses
If you need glasses or contact lenses to drive, make sure you are wearing them before the eyesight check begins.
Know the Car
Practise using the vehicle controls before your test, including lights, demisters, windscreen washers, horn and other controls that could be included in a Show Me question.
Focus on Safe Driving
The examiner is looking for safe and responsible driving. Concentrate on the road rather than trying to produce a perfect drive.
Observation Is Essential
Make effective observations before moving off, changing direction, changing lanes or performing a manoeuvre.
- Check mirrors regularly
- Check blind spots when necessary
- Look properly at junctions
- React to other road users
Use Your Mirrors
Use your mirrors before changing speed or direction. Make your observations naturally and early enough to react safely.
- Before signalling
- Before changing lanes
- Before slowing down
- Before changing direction
Use an Appropriate Speed
Always observe the speed limit, but remember that the safest speed may sometimes be lower because of traffic, pedestrians, weather or road conditions.
Keep a Safe Distance
Leave enough space between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead. Increase the distance when road or weather conditions require it.
Plan at Junctions
Approach junctions at a suitable speed and give yourself enough time to observe, decide and act safely.
Read the Road Ahead
Look well ahead for traffic lights, road signs, pedestrians, parked vehicles, crossings and changes in the road environment.
Don't Panic If You Take a Wrong Turn
Part of the test involves driving independently using a sat nav, traffic signs or a combination of both.
Taking a wrong turning does not automatically mean you have failed. Continue driving safely and follow the examiner's instructions. Safe decision-making is more important than following the route perfectly.
Listen to the Sat Nav
Listen to the instructions but continue observing road signs, markings and traffic conditions yourself. The sat nav does not replace your own judgement.
Ask If You Are Unsure
If you do not understand an instruction, ask the examiner to repeat it. It is better to clarify than to rush into an unsafe decision.
Take Your Time
Your manoeuvre should be controlled, accurate and safe. There is no prize for completing it quickly.
Control the Vehicle
Keep your speed low enough to maintain control. Make small corrections when necessary rather than rushing the manoeuvre.
Keep Observing
Continue checking all around the vehicle during the manoeuvre. Pay particular attention to pedestrians, cyclists and approaching vehicles.
If You Make a Mistake, Keep Driving
One mistake does not necessarily mean that your test is over. Stay focused on what happens next.
Candidates sometimes make a small error and then lose concentration because they assume they have failed. Reset your focus immediately and continue to drive safely.
Common Areas to Watch
These are important driving skills to pay particular attention to during your preparation.
Insufficient Observation
Always make effective observations before moving off, entering a junction or changing direction.
Mirror Checks
Remember to use your mirrors before changing speed, position or direction.
Junction Decisions
Avoid rushing into gaps. Take enough time to judge the speed and distance of approaching traffic.
Speed Control
Keep your speed appropriate for the road, traffic and weather conditions.
Road Position
Maintain an appropriate position on the road and plan early when approaching turns or changing lanes.
Responding to Signs
Look ahead for signs, road markings and traffic lights, and react to them early.
Your Final Checklist
A simple routine can help you arrive at the test centre feeling organised and ready.
Get a Good Night's Sleep
Avoid staying up late revising. Being rested will help your concentration and decision-making.
Eat and Drink Normally
Have something to eat and stay hydrated before your test so that you can concentrate properly.
Have a Warm-Up Lesson
A lesson before the test can help you settle into the car, practise key skills and get comfortable before meeting the examiner.
Arrive on Time
Plan your journey to the test centre and make sure you are there before your appointment begins.
Drive the Way You Have Been Taught
Do not change your driving style because an examiner is sitting beside you. Use the safe routines you have practised during your lessons.
Remember These Three Things
Safety and awareness should always come before trying to impress the examiner.
If something does not go perfectly, keep concentrating on the road ahead.
Look ahead, use your mirrors and be aware of what other road users are doing.
